Celebrating the next generation of leaders

For any organization, supporting the next generation of workers will undoubtedly help build future leaders. That’s why Sedgwick invests in supporting students entering our industry to pursue careers. The Sedgwick / Steven E. Penman Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Spencer Educational Foundation is awarded to one undergraduate student each year. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in risk management / insurance.

The 2021 scholarship recipient is Alexis Hanchett, a junior working towards her bachelor’s degree in insurance and risk management while minoring in claims investigation at Olivet College. Following her graduation in May of 2022, she hopes to work in the excess and surplus lines industry in a remote setting.

“I would encourage any student in college or thinking about going to college to consider the insurance industry as an option. Many believe insurance is all about sales but there is much more to it and because of its many outlets there is a place for any type of personality. I originally chose insurance because the job security it offered but now that I am studying it and have completed my internships I see all of the areas I find myself interested in.” - Alexis Hanchett

It brings me great joy to know that Steve Penman’s name and legacy are tied to this scholarship. Steve spent his 40-year career growing as an individual and improving the claims industry. I know personally from my involvement with the Spencer Educational Foundation as chairperson just how strong the need is to continue to attract and retain new talent. I applaud Alexis’ efforts to encourage other students to pursue the many diverse opportunities this industry offers.

While we couldn’t be in person this year to celebrate with Alexis, I am buoyed with excitement knowing that she may have the chance to attend a future RIMS conference. It’s students like Alexis who will take the industry far. We know that many recipients in the years to come will choose paths not related to the work Sedgwick does, but it all weaves together to create an industry that continues to be a place for anyone to find a meaningful career.
