Damage has been extensive after a tropical storm rapidly strengthened into a powerful Category 5 hurricane and made landfall in the resort city of Acapulco, Mexico, on Wednesday.

Sustained winds of 165 mph ripped walls and roofs off buildings, shattered windows, toppled trees and downed power lines. The hurricane also unleashed massive flooding, with water as high as waist-level in some areas.
